Romeo and Juliet of South Cornwall: the real life wedding of Kate and Jake

Updated: Nov 15

Kate and Jake’s romantic and elegant wedding ceremony was held at The Gate on Saturday 30 April 2022… another favourite real life wedding in Cornwall for us!

…. And it was a ceremony which revealed the adventures of The Liskeard Girl and the Looe Boy – aka the Romeo and Juliet of south Cornwall!

This was one of those bookings you just know you are not going to forget in a hurry. The couple – truly awesome! Their children – just gorgeous! Their story – so very, very good. Their venue – wowser!!! The photographer – simply one of our faves. And their guests – oh my gosh, they were on form!

But let’s go back to the beginning. Our initial chat with Kate over the phone gave us all the feels – her and Jake’s vision for their wedding celebration was completely in line with our favourite style of ceremony, and we particularly loved that she was keen to include a champagne toast – (it doesn’t matter how up-to-date the registration service ever gets, I doubt they will ever allow alcohol as part of a ceremony!).

And when we had our first meeting at Lanhydrock, where their littlest girl could run around and play, we knew this was going to be one of those fabulous ceremonies – the perfect blending of storytelling, fun and mischief, heartfelt surprises, good old-fashioned romance, maybe some tears and definitely much love!

So it was a joy to write this ceremony – the only challenge being to fit everything in, as there were so many ‘best bits’ to choose from. On sending their first draft, this was Kate’s feedback: “Oh my gosh Lisa, that is absolutely wonderful! You have got it spot on. I am in tears here, how on earth will I hold it together during the actual ceremony?!” And Jake added, “I love it! I was trying hard to keep it together in front of all my work mates when I was reading it. Loved it!” To which we always say, a wedding isn’t really a wedding without a few happy tears – and that includes from your celebrant!

The day arrived with blue skies and it was a fresh Spring day which greeted us. The guests assembled in The Gate’s funky bar and it was wonderful to meet up with Kate’s Dad and step-Dad who were both accompanying Kate on her walk down the aisle.

And once gathered in the stunning stretch tent, the ceremony commenced, with everyone in awe of what a beautiful couple Kate and Jake made. We had a few surprises in store, both Kate’s sister and Jake’s brother provided readings which Kate and Jake didn’t know about – with Ben choosing to read the lyrics from “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” and Abi reading “Here’s To Right Now”, a piece which led perfectly to our champagne toast. Kate made us all laugh with a cheeky impromptu twist in her vows, the best men ‘lost’ the rings, and I had chatted with Kate and Jake individually so we could include some special words from each of them that they had not seen in advance of the date.

However, one of my personal highlights was listening to Jake’s promises to the children, a moment during which you could hear a pin drop and there was not a dry eye in the house. Well done Jake, you held it together after all!

The morning following the wedding we received this wonderful message:

THANK YOU soooo much! You were WONDERFUL! We absolutely loved our ceremony and we’ve had so many lovely comments on how nice it was - relaxed, fun yet still full of so much love and so many guests said how they loved you. Thank you again from Mr and Mrs Palmer!

Awww shush you make us blush! But sometimes you get that perfect storm where everything comes together and the fit is incredible – so we are insanely grateful to Kate and Jake for choosing us in the first place.

And finally, talking of the perfect storm, just a note to say it was just awesome to be back working with one of our favourite photographers Andy from UGotTheLove - and a real pleasure to be the first wedding for new venue The Gate – so beautifully hosted, we can’t wait to be back there!

Congratulations Jake and Kate – you’re the best!
